Near-duplicate (or very very similar) photo detection and merging (of meta data)

I see you have completed this but I have a near similar problem: I often use sports mode and take several shots in a row and maybe the fourth or fifth has the optimal look or expression on the face of the subject. Will picular select randomly from a series of say ten pictures that are enar similar? Or I change focus or aperture and the images are nearly alike but dephth is very different.. Will I be able to save and delete manually and not have this type of dissimilar photos deleted for emd?

This would be a game changer for me.
The scenario I have is I'll take a photo on my phone, which is backed-up automatically in a cloud location, and then when my phone is full I'll take a dump of my phone storage to capture other photos that I've been sent (eg, on WhatsApp) that I want to keep... but I know it will have duplicates in there of photos that I know I've sent via WhatsApp too, but I've got the original already stored from the original backup :)
This is the single biggest thing that is delaying me bring all of my photos into one place.

Steven Garratt: Very interesting. To be totally honest, we feel pretty much the same as you. We are waiting to go all in and bring all our photos in as we feel that this feature would make it so much easier to get through the first bulk of sorting. So believe us, we are very eager to make this feature come alive!
Just as a sidenote. Real duplicates, like files with no changes to them are already detected and skipped at upload, but if any metadata or tiny effect or anything has changed, it is not detected.
I will rename this feature to make this clear. From duplicates to near-duplicate.

That's spot on :)
If it helps with testing at all, a common scenario for me would be up to 4 versions of the same photo, eg:
- The original photo (as a direct bulk back-up from my phone, usually when changing/upgrading phones)
- A high res version (but not full resolution, eg, Google Photos 'Storage Saver' that compresses it slightly)
- A more compressed version (sent via WhatsApp and then backed up as part of my phone back-up)
- The same as number 3, but another copy with different meta-data (received via WhatApp - for when trying to combine both mine and my Wifes photos)

Steven Garratt: This information is great. Thank you!
